SCOOP !!! – JUMAR Press Release

PRESS RELEASE

JUMAR APPOINTS NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Jumar, a leading provider of IT Services and Solutions, has appointed Paul Hughes as its new business development director. Paul was formerly Vice President, EMEA Mainframe Solutions and Services at CA (formally Computer Associates) following the acquisition of Sterling Software and is a well known figure in the IT industry.
Wendy Merricks, managing director at Jumar comments, “We are delighted to have Paul on board. His extensive experience of the IT services and solutions market and of working in a global business will be a valuable contribution to accelerating our growth internationally.”
In response, Paul explains, “I have tracked Jumar from its inception and have always been
hugely impressed by the professionalism of its people, as well as the quality of its products and services. It has a strong brand and growing portfolio of skills, services and solutions and I am very pleased to be joining the company at this exciting point in its development.
Jumar’s inclusive culture and strong work life balance ethic has played a large part in my decision to join. All of the directors have young families and it is a tribute to the culture of the company that they have managed to build a thriving business and still maintain that strong family feel.”
The business is soundly based on developing long term, close relationships with its customers and more recently implementing a number of high profile strategic partnerships.
Paul’s role will be to continue building these relationships and to develop new customers and channels to market, particularly in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions.

Gentalk.biz Software Upgrade

Beginning this evening, I will be upgrading the software behind gentalk.biz. The core software platform will be upgraded, along with some of the widgets that make the site work. Please be patient if the site seems unavailable, or unresponsive for a while – please try again later. I’ll try and make the upgrade as painless as possible, and will be submitting “microblog entries” (See News from Second Life in the right sidebar) with progress information as I go. Thanks for your support…….

EDIT[16-JUL-2008]: The upgrade went OK – there is still a problem with the archives – they ARE available, but in a modified form (see the bottom of the left sidebar). I’m still working on the problem and hope to have it resolved over the next few days.

GenIE expression builder

As is my wont, I comment on new features of tools in the ecosystem. Announced as part of IET‘s 7.7 release , (see the spotlIEt issue 11 for details) the updated Expression Builder adds more power to GenIE. Without a download, you can modify many expressions that would otherwise require a download to change. Its those annoying little bugs that you discover after uploading that would only take 5 seconds to correct, that would require a 30 minute download to facilitate the correction that this feature can be used to target – quite an achievement in productivity!

IET seem to have spotted (again) a niche in the Gen developer’s toolbox into which they can plug a feature that will be so useful to all developers.

So – all in all – Expression Builder gets the thumbs up!.

EDIT: IET pointed out in this forum posting that since GenIE locks the model for the duration of the update, the integrity of the model is ALWAYS maintained – thanks to them for pointing that out!

Should Gen support a Linux desktop ?

Linux offers many desktop alternatives. The most popular desktop environments are GNOME, KDE and XFCE. Since Gen supports Linux on the server side, maybe it should allow a desktop deployment of clients on a client Linux distribution ?

Many organisations are now considering migration to a Linux desktop, especially in the Government sector, together with the groundswell toward open source software.

One could argue that applications deployed via the medium of a browser should display and work correctly on any desktop (or even mobile) platform, but for those organisations who wish to make the move to a Linux-based desktop for reasons of cost, ease of deployment or whatever, if they have non-web-style Gen applications, there is a wall standing in their way.

Since there are many distributions of Linux out there, Gen probably cannot be certified against all of them, but possibly a move toward  supporting one or two of the major distros may be a good thing…….
